Garmin GPSmap 60CSx : Setting Up Malaysia-Singapore Map

13 January 2010 • Comments: 24

Alhamdulillah, finally I have the opportunity to own a GPS device. The brand is Garmin, model GPSmap 60CSx and it is designed for outdoor activity. This GPS device is not build for navigation purpose, but for tracking and marking your points of interest, which later you can refer back according to your plan of action.

To be truth, the preload map is very poor in quality. Moreover, I was not bundled with a 64mb MicroSD card which supposed to be used for additional map. Thus, I dug out my phone’s MicroSD card and loaded it into my GPS.

How To Get Malaysia / Singapore Map:

Tools needed: A computer with good internet connection, MicroSD card (64Mb or more), the bundled USB cable.
Make sure you have already installed the bundled MapSource – Trip & Waypoint Manager application. This will install the GPS driver.

  1. Go to malsingmaps forum and register.
  2. Download the map from this link. Scroll down or go the latest page to download the latest map. To date, the latest version is MSM All v4.07.
  3. Unzip or extract the downloaded file, and you should get a file named gmapsupp.img.
  4. Create a Folder name ‘Garmin’ in your MicroSD card, and copy the gmapsupp.img file into the folder.
    Or
Put in the MicroSD into its slot under the battery compartment. Plug in the USB cable to your GPS unit. Power up the GPS. Double click the MENU button. Find SETUP, and click ENTR. Find INTERFACE and click ENTR. Highlight the ‘USB Mass Storage’ and click ENTR. Now, your GPS will disguise as a card reader. You should be able to detect the MicroSD as a removable device on your computer. Create folder name ‘Garmin’ and copy the gmapsupp.img file into the folder. When done, eject the device.
  5. When you rebooted your GPS, your should be able to see the map loaded into your screen, plus with more function available.
