Google Chrome (Mac) and Chromium (Mac)

Previously, I showed you how to get Chrome-like for your Mac, code name Chromium. It was a series of daily development for upcoming Chrome, under the base of Chromium project.

However, today I would to share to you the Developer Release of Google Chrome for Mac, an official build of Chrome. With this release of Google Chrome, it is built with auto-update algorithm, code name Courgette, which serves as the agent for updating the browser. The advantages of having this new feature is that when you’re updating to the latest definition and build, it is no longer in full size installer and instead it will only download the core or any relevant updates. This means that the patches size will be smaller and should be faster.

Generally, the usually updates need a download of a 10Mb size, whereas the fix was only for 2 or three lines. However, with Courgette, the updates will only require to download the necessary files and core. Here are the comparison by the developer:

  • Full update: 10,385,920 bytes
  • bsdiff update: 704,512 bytes (previous algorithm)
  • Courgette update: 78,848 bytes (latest)

Quoted from the developer’s blog [link] :

The small size in combination with Google Chrome’s silent update means we can update as often as necessary to keep users safe.

How to get the installer:

This tutorial is strictly for developer and advance user. The build is still under development and may contain serious bug. Please be aware of this.

  1. Visit this page, the ‘Early Access Release Channel’ [link]
  2. Navigate to your choice of OS, and for today, we choose Mac.
  3. Attention:
Requirement: Intel CPU; Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later.
Alert: The Mac build still lacks certain privacy features, and is not appropriate for general consumer use.
  4. Click on the ‘Dev Channel’ Link, it will redirect you to the EULA and download page.
  5. Read the Term of Service, if you want to.
  6. When you’re done, you may click on the ‘Accept and Download’ button
  7. When the downloading is done, run the DMG file, and drag the Google Chrome icon onto the Application icon.
  8. Now you may start using Google Chrome on Mac.
  9. Hehe.
  10. Owh, remember, it is not a stable or perfect build for public release, thus it shall work under few disadvantages and bugs.

Current Issue:

There is still no official Flash Player support. So, don’t keep on complaining and whining that the Google Chrome (Mac) is awful or sucks. You should acknowledge that it is still under rapid and robust development.

However, you should acknowledge the speed of the page rendering and loading. Currently, it should leave your Firefox and Safari behind quite a distance. Haha.
