Mobile Phone : A Bizarre Dilemma

It is the time for me to write a review on gadget, and I choose to discuss about mobile phones, as currently I am seeking for a replacement of my old Sony Ericsson Z550i, a clamshell phone. I get the spirit to write this post after I read my friend’s awesome review on Smarphones (Part 1Part 2Part 3). Mostly, Dzim (a.k.a Dzimmo) discussed about the operating system of the phone. I will touch some of that and with addition of other value.

There are several types of mobile operating systems, namely : Symbian, Windows Mobile, Mac OSX, java based, and quite latest is the Android. Remember, Android is not a GPhone, or so called Google Phone. It is an mobile operating system which is based on open source, and Google is one of the developer involved in the production of the system. Ok, here are the some of the listed phone that I’m going to review:

HTC Touch Pro

Personally, I fell for this phone once, and that is only temporary. Why? I dumped this phone because of the system, which utilize Windows Mobile. If you ever wonder why I hate this Windows Mobile so much, it is because the system is just a smaller version of it Windows Parent. The system hog a lot of memory and behave the same way as its parent: slow, lagging and vulnerable to viruses attack. Perhaps, the touch really was a ’something’ for all of you, but if the responsiveness is very low, you won’t feel fun of using it. What you really need is a ‘Snap-Snap-Snap’ responsive. Just like when you’re using normal phone, such as Nokia 3310 and some of them.

But, still this boy has a very good HSDPA speed (7.2 Mbps), built in GPS unit, WiFi (b/g) and a quite adequate 3.15 MP camera. However, the thickness of this ‘touchy’ almost as 2.0 cm, because it embed a full QWERTY Keyboard. And, if you were looking at this one as a portable media player, personally, I won’t suggest this one.

Nokia E71

To date, my friend and my father are using this type of Nokia. This boy utilize Symbian OS 9.2, which is quite reliable compared to its predecessor. When we’re talking about Symbian, you may dream about its available software, and other utilities. They’re bunch of Symbian Software which can help with your daily works. About the responsiveness, I can still bare with this boy. The GPS system is good though and my dad use it a lot. Having a full QWERTY Keyboard makes this boy has smaller screen as half of it is for the keyboard. Almost resembles Blackberry. Hehe.

However, this boy also is very vulnerable to viruses and being a non-Nokia fan, I will never buy this phone. Furthermore, I want to have a touch screen. Not this type of phone. This is so back dated for Multi-touch season. So, sorry E71, you lost my vote. Ops, before I forget, the camera quality is good, as what you expected from Nokia.

EXPERIA X1 (Sony Ericsson)

Ok. Personally, I will say, that this phone is a b*lls**t from Sony Ericsson. You want to know why? Because it utilize Windows Mobile. Owh, I hate Windows!! Hate you! I’ve tried this phone at PC Fair, December 2008. I’ve played with it, and all I can say is, NEVER BUY THIS PHONE. The system is lagging, apparently, VERY LAGGING (as expected from WinMo). Those sellers want to persuade me to buy this old-hag, but, I tried to scroll, ‘touch’ (its more to PRESS) and I barely manage to touch anything. Dumb.

I thought, if this phone is a product of Sony E, it will become a very good media phone, as you can see, those W-Series are very good as an audio based media player (not sure about video). However, the User Interface may got your attention, but it is just another layer of dummy above the normal Windows Mobile core, which mean, Task Manager and those unreliable windows codes. Huhu. Despite all of that, the design of the phone is nice. The slide keyboard will curve out the screen and this will improve the typing experience.

LG KC910 Renoir

I’ve made a full research on this stuff, but, I still can’t manage to find it at nearest phone stores. Oh well, I’ll continue with the review, based on my opinion and some responses I read on the net. The phone has a very nice Camera. It embeds 8.0 MP camera and I do fall for that features (as a geologist, a good and ease to camera is a need). The system is neither Symbian OS nor Windows Mobile. So, I think it is more reliable and compatible with the hardware built-in. It also serve a GPS unit and this is one of the features that hooks me up to this phone. Provided Divx and Xvid compatible, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, a nice system surround and the ability to record high speed video (woot!).

However, seeking to the price and some responses which reported that the video and voice might not sync to each other, while playing. I’m not sure which video, either the recorded or the movies that you download on the mobile. Furthermore, lack of extra software makes it more less productive. Huk huk. Hmm, I guess, I fell for every touchscreen phone nowadays. :P

and the last but not least, the famous and scandalous…

iPhone 3G

Bla bla bla. Ok, I know that I am a fan of Apple product, but I don’t care. Hahaha. And I’ll list out why I really want to have this magic phone (hehe) :

  1. It utilize Mac OS X (10.4), which means that, highly invulnerable to viruses, and highly stable (not perfect, but better than WinMo)
  2. A very nice and responsive Touchscreen
  3. Accelerometer that has high responsiveness
  4. Full support from Apple itself.
  5. A powerful audio and video player. The resolution is awesome! 16 Million!
  6. Full html internet browser (Safari)
  7. GPS unit
  8. Apps that were developed specially for iPhone, and you can get it from Apps Store!

However, nobody is perfect, so, this baby also has its own drawbacks:

  1. No memory card slot
  2. When there is not subsidy from Telco, it is highly expensive
  3. Low quality camera (2.0 MP, that was years back!)
  4. Only compatible with iTunes
  5. Not fully compatible with Malaysian Telecom System
  6. Bluetooth only for headset (and not all headset supported)
  7. NOT YET IN MALAYSIA! (means that, it is not supported is Malaysia, not customer service)
  8. Thus, if I bought the unlock version, some apps will not compatible with our system.

Sadly, I just have to wait for Apple and Maxis to bring it to Malaysia, and setup the system. And please Maxis, please serve us your subsidy on this magic phone, if you want the iPhone to break into the market. Malaysian are not that rich, yet (including me).

Currently, the price of an iPhone is about RM2500 and above. And some people complained that it is not fully compatible with Maxis. But, still, if someone were to sell the iPhone for less than RM 1000 to me, either 2nd or 3rd hand, I will grab that chances. :D

Yes, I’m a Mac Geek. LOL.

My friend downgraded from iPhone 3G to E71. Most of my friends are using E71. But no touchy2.

I’m just gonna stick to my old phone. All I need is call and sms. Nothing more. If I want wifi, I’ll bring along my Netbook. Easy..
