Volume resets to mute

I’m sure all of you are very excited with your new Mac OS X Snow Leopard. With those new enhancement, refinement and cleaner interface. However, every time you booted your machine, your audio gets reset to mute. And, you might think that you did silent off your machine.

But, it seems that the case happened every time you booted. Actually it is the sign of the audio bug after Snow Leopard upgrade. I’m not sure about clean install.

How to fix this issue:

  • Open your Finder. Go to your Macintosh HD (root drive) / Library / Preferences / Audio
  • Look for these two files:
    - com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
    - com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
  • Delete both of them. (or just drag them to the Trash)
  • Set your preferred volume levels
  • Reboot.
  • You’re done.

If you ask me what is the reason, well, personally, I don’t know. Perhaps it is an old preference from Leopard, which is not compatible with Snow Leopard new system architecture.
